Young Choreographers

Program I

The popular project "Young Choreographers" has become a firmly established institution at Hamburg Ballet. In this program, dancers from the current ensemble create their own works and take full responsibility for the artistic design – from the choreography itself to the music, as well as lighting and costume design, stage sets, projections, and props used on stage. It’s never boring: the "Young Choreographers" use the stage as a platform to experiment with different movement languages and to develop new artistic concepts. Their musical choices are just as diverse, ranging from classical to pop, electronic, jazz, and film soundtracks – offering something for every taste.

The "Young Choreographers" project, founded in Hamburg in 1974 by John Neumeier, has been continued ever since, providing company members with the opportunity to shift roles and explore their creativity as choreographers. In doing so, it not only opens up a possible career path for dancers after their performing careers, but also actively supports their artistic development. A look at recent years confirms its success: current and former ensemble members such as Kristína Paulin, Yuka Oishi, Aleix Martínez, and Edvin Revazov have since gone on to work professionally as choreographers, either full-time or alongside their dancing careers.
