The head stays on!
Opera workshop Salome for the revival of Dmitri Tcherniakov's production
Biggest surprise of the evening: Jochanaan's head stays on!
Great excitement: Then the whole story with the biblical Salome and John the Baptist is no longer true!
That's right.
But even Oscar Wilde's play, the model for the opera text (keyword “literary opera”), is not a civilized adaptation of the biblical tradition, but a very modern bourgeois family drama. The text and the music by Richard Strauss, which penetrates every last nerve fiber, speak unmistakably about this.
Tcherniakov is a proven connoisseur of such decadent family constellations, whose catastrophe he creates with an incredible amount of subtlety and humor in the character development. This benefits not only the title character, but everyone.
And why does Jochanaan remain, at least physically, decapitated?
This will be revealed to the participants in the opera workshop or by explaining the text and music in detail. The recording of the Hamburg premiere with Asmik Grigorian in the title role will also be shown.
