Russian composer Vladimir Tarnopolski, born in 1955, is certainly no stranger to contemporary music. His works have been performed at many major festivals over the past decades. He has received numerous awards and released many of his works on CD. As a professor of composition at the Moscow Tchaikovsky Conservatory, he has already passed on his knowledge to an entire generation of up-and-coming composers. "In the Dark Before Dawn" is the title of a new work commissioned by the Philharmonic State Orchestra, which will be premiered here. "Sinfonia eroica" was the title Ludwig van Beethoven gave his third symphony in 1804, a "heroic symphony composed to celebrate the memory of a great man." Whether this "great man" was to be little Napoleon - at first, probably so. But Beethoven probably destroyed a corresponding dedication, since the Corsican's coronation as emperor by his own hand was for the composer a bitter betrayal of the republican ideas of the French Enlightenment. Was Beethoven himself perhaps a hero? An innovator in the music-historical sense? After all, he truly breaks new ground with his "Eroica" ...
"Music represents our security and confidence and is therefore probably representative of our highest values."
Frank Polter, percussionist
