An Argentinian in New York

In this season too the Hamburg State Opera is inviting you to the ‚AfterWork‘. On specific Thursdays and Fridays, from 18.00 to 19.00 in the opera stabile you can celebrate with us the beginning of the weekend with different styles of music and theater from artists and guests.

Over 300 tangos, the foundation of Tango Nuevo and his quote "I am a tango man" form a clear picture of the Argentinian composer and bandoneon player Astor Piazzolla. But since tango music was also the world of his parents, the young Piazzolla, who came to New York with his family as a child, sought his own path: the bandoneon bought for him was of no interest to him, the music of Johann Sebastian Bach seemed much more exciting, and how could it be otherwise in New York - jazz. In this AfterWork, we experience the music that shaped him, that he loved and, of course, Piazzolla's own creations.
