La clemenza di Tito

Introduction at 5.20 pm

"If a stern heart is needed for rule, either take away my rule or give me another heart." With these words, Emperor Titus addresses the gods. He, who floods the world with goodness, must see it in flames. The people love their philanthropic ruler, but times are troubled and Titus' "clemenza," his clemency, may be the last way to assert traditional sovereignty. Even the failed assassination attempt on him, planned by Vitellia, who is to become his empress, (not) executed by his closest friend Sesto, he forgives and holds fast to the humanist faith, his world is also irretrievably in decline. - What a theatrical celebration of changing times, Mozart's coronation opera, dedicated to Emperor Leopold II, who as Grand Duke abolished the death penalty in 1786, making Tuscany the first state without executions.
