Ludwig van Beethoven

Fidelio

Introduction at 6.20 pm

Florestan has been unjustly incarcerated for “fighting for the truth”. The governor of the state prisons, Pizarro, is responsible and therefore needs to eliminate Florestan so as not to be prosecuted himself. However, Florestan’s wife Leonore gains employment in the prison without revealing her identity, and managing to liberate her husband. The question remains: which liberty is this? What happens after liberty is regained? These are questions Beethoven’s opera asks – and leaves unanswered. The performance history of “Fidelio” through all the political systems Germany has undergone has turned the opera itself into an archive. It condenses German history, asking the painful question what the German dream – or nightmare – might be today. Florestan – a Republican Jesus who was captured and liberated for our sake; Leonore – a new type of woman, capable of bearing political responsibility.
