Georges Bizet

Introduction at 5.20 pm

Carmen will die in the end. That is certain, both to the audience and to Carmen herself, who speaks of an inevitable fate. It is the fate of an attractive factory worker from Seville, an idolised, confident woman. In Don José, Carmen meets a man who falls hopelessly for her, but also confines her through his love. In the conflict between her freedom and this love, she decides in favour of freedom. Don José cannot and will not accept this, he sees red - literally - and kills Carmen. Today, such an act is called femicide: women are killed because they are women. Men delude themselves into believing that the woman belongs to them and that they have total power over her. Ultimately, anyone can be a murderer when it comes to love, to frenzy, to jealousy, to obsession.
