John Neumeier has developed a new schedule for the 46th Hamburg Ballet Days (June 13-27). The festival will be opened by "Hamlet 21" (June 13, 14 and 22), a new version of John Neumeier's ballet "Hamlet" whose revival at the end of March 2020 was prevented by the Corona pandemic. Since then, John Neumeier continued to rework the choreography fundamentally and presents this new version as the festival's premiere.
"The continuous lockdown of the cultural sector is a great burden: for us as artists, but also for our society. Just now, however, it is vital to aim high! The newly conceived program of the Hamburg Ballet Days is a sign of life which addresses the widespread longing for personal encounters and cultural live events.", says John Neumeier.
For the first time in the history of the Hamburg Ballet Days, the "Nijinsky Gala" is scheduled for two consecutive performances (June 27, 2 pm and 7 pm). Except for "A Midsummer Night's Dream", all further productions of the festival will also be performed twice: "Ghost Light", "Beethoven Project II", "Death in Venice" and "Beethoven Project I".
Screening "A Midsummer Night's Dream"
As a part of the Hamburg Ballet Days, John Neumeier presents his new ballet film "A Midsummer Night's Dream" in a screening on June 21. The Hamburg Ballet took advantage of the lockdown to record this repertoire classic with film director Myriam Hoyer in 4k resolution and under studio conditions in the empty Hamburg State Opera.
The release of the ballet film version is planned this summer. The production with the label C Major was supported by Foundation for the Patronage of the Hamburg State Opera, Foundation John Neumeier and Wempe.
